His story - It's just before the Labor Day weekend 1959 in his hometown of Castle Rock, Oregon, just before he is about to enter junior high. He, an insecure young man, feels more invisible at home than usual as it's five months after the tragic death of his older brother Denny, the favored son, who he loved and misses as much as anyone. His parents, who just don't understand Gordie's love of storytelling and writing as opposed to Denny's athletic pursuits, still have not gotten over their grief. Gordie spends much time with his three closest same aged friends, who attend school together. Vern Tessio is the slightly dim overweight one, that dimness largely out of naivety. Teddy Duchamp is the crazy one, whose father is also crazy, and he once held Teddy's ear to a stove and nearly burned it off. And Chris Chambers, Gordie's best friend, has in the public mindset a predetermined future as a lowlife, being just the latest lowlife in the Chambers family. Regardless, Chris acts more as a responsible father figure to Gordie in many ways than Gordie's own father. Vern learns from secretly overhearing his older delinquent brother Billy's conversation that he has discovered a dead body in the woods about twenty or thirty miles away, but does not want to do anything about it or tell anyone, especially in authority. With Vern telling his three friends, the four believe it is probably Ray Brower, a boy around their age from another town who went missing three days ago while going blueberry picking. Needing to walk there, they decide to go retrieve the body and thus become heroes in the process. They devise a plan of attack that will give them about twenty-four hours before their respective families may even realize that they are gone. What the four don't realize is that Billy does eventually tell his group of friends, led by the sadistic Ace Merrill, who has a win at any cost mentality, and as such it becomes a race to retrieve the body. The direction by Rob Reiner was real good by the script was bad and it was too white bread for my taste. That's what I liked about the story, anyone could relate to it but when it's milked through by a hack writer and pacified for mainstream audiences it becomes bland and generic. But the acting form the kids was real good and it's watchable but not as great as soon many people make it out to be.
STAND BY ME follows the main character Gordie as he relives his long lost childhood. A recent tragedy brings upon long lost memories of his old playmates. We relive that hot summer of 1960 and learn about the main characters and the trials and tribulations of growing up. One day, the summer of their innocence was lost forever when one of their friends tells them some news and takes them on adventure. A long one that re-examines their lives and what lies ahead of them in the future.
Not a bad movie and not a classic. But if you're a fan of River Phoenix or his eighties running buddy Corey Feldman then you'll be in heaven. But fans of the book might not be that stoked about it.

Sorry my friends, I have to die because this game is directed by Hajime Tabata. I loved Stand By Me, a great childhood adventure film which shows how growing up can be tough, fun, exciting & life changing.
Now i'm a bit older the movie reminds me about how great it was being a worry free kid with so much to explore, and how the word boredom barley existed. I guess watching it these days could make me a little jealous & depressed that my childhood is over, but in the best possible way. Its always good to look back and smile, even if you can't turn back the clock.
The acting was great, especially from Corey Feldman & Keither Sutherland who both have roles within other movies in my top 20 list as well, i really think it deserved an Oscar and not just a nomination but an 8.1 on IMDb is just as rewarding i guess. br> i too give it an 8/10.
